About Whatever Works Education

Meet Robin Ashman

With two decades of dedicated experience in education, Robin brings a unique blend of practical expertise and heartfelt commitment to every aspect of teaching and learning. His journey through education is as diverse as the students he supports, from working  in mainstream inclusion departments helping students at risk of permanent exclusion, developing innovative social skills interventions, to teaching in specialised SEND environments.

Robin says:

“In 2012, I discovered Non-Violent Communication, (NVC), which is a person-centred approach developed by the American psychologist, Marshall Rosenberg. I have developed my approach to include NVC and to embed it in all aspects of my work.

“Marshall Rosenberg says that,

“When you understand that another person’s behavior is the result of their own unmet needs, you begin to see that their behavior is not about you.”

“With this in mind, helping everyone to understand their own feelings and needs, (including our own), will help us to meet those needs, and create learning spaces where everyone belongs. This is what Whatever Works sets out to achieve. I work on a ‘toolbox’ model to help staff and students to develop their own, unique toolbox of strategies that will help them to take their next steps on their learning journey.”

Our Story

Whatever Works Education was born from a simple, yet powerful observation: when students feel they truly belong, amazing things happen. Drawing from experiences in special education, mainstream schools, and from delivering tailored, one-to-one support, we’ve developed an approach that puts relationships and understanding at the heart of learning.

Our Values

Creativity – we learn when we are able to express ourselves in ways that are meaningful

Autonomy – individuals want to be empowered to make their own decisions

Connection – everybody wants to be accepted and included

Our Philosophy

We believe that effective education is built on three core principles:

Every Person Belongs – Learning flourishes in environments where everyone is valued

Connection Comes First – Strong, professional relationships create the foundations for successful learning

Everyone Has Their Own Toolbox – Developing our own strategies as adults and helping students to discover theirs changes attitudes to learning and to life
